Each plaque is individually coated with a lacquer-based paint to act as a resist. The words are scratched through the paint, and the little plaque is suspended in a vat of ferric nitrate. This etches the exposed areas. They stay in the bath for a couple hours, come out, get neutralized and the paint sanded off. All edges and corners are then rounded, for comfort
